Normally I would agree with this. AMD cpus are garbage except for certain niche needs, one being certain content creation or scientific applications (e.g., encoding) that puts all 8 of those cores to work, in which case the FX-8350 is a damn good buy at $200. If gamepin is doing a lot of that sort of work, and I suspect he is, then that is a fantastic processor.

If someone gave me a 4930k I'd certainly take it but would never buy that thing at its current price. I like pissing away money as much as the next stupid ******* with disposable income, which is why I'm getting drunk on johnny walker blue right now, but for my purposes (and probably yours too) an i5 with a decent overclock will do everything I need it to do for less money.

But as someone who sells computers, I'm pretty thankful for guys who have the attitude "the more money I spend on it, the bigger my epeen will be!" Gettin big money from epeen enlargement over here.

Not sure what game is doing, but you are right, for science, AMD is a neat solution for some tasks (phylogenomics is one). I just spend 6 grand from a grant on a system with two of these, making it a total of 32 cores:
    Code:
    processor : 31
    vendor_id : AuthenticAMD
    cpu family : 21

Respect. But just a suggestion, black for regular drinking, blue for friends. There really is no place for red in this life.

    What I need is:
    • EVE
    • SC2 ULTRA
    • Some clock intensive and sometimes multi core apps

For the 3rd part, I like to come home from work and continue my job, cause it's fun. The problem is that I need a beefed up PC for me to be able to get fast responses to my tasks. If responses are slow, I get annoyed and do something else. Tasks are mainly associated with DNA and Protein alignment. I won't be do something like genome assemblies or phylogenomics at home, those take days or weeks to complete, but multiple sequence alignments, assemblies on small sets of sequences and different other small tasks give answers in a matter of seconds, and I need that answer quickly to be able to take the decision of what's the next thing, and the faster this goes, the more I can get done. I want a machine that can respond as quick as my brain thinks.

Anyways, the system I build will do it. Whether it was possible to get something cheaper, it was, but at a lower performance (even if slightly), that's for sure. There is a point to the premium hardware, you can drink black label frequently and blue ocasionally, but you can also drink blue frequently and Henessey XO ocassionaly. Seriously, make sure you try cognac, they call it divine wine.

My friends are all retards who don't appreciate fine spirits. Can't even tell the difference between knob creek single barrel reserve and jack Daniels. Or scotch from bourbon. So when I finish a bottle I pour cheap **** in it and make em feel special when I share it. No one has figured it out yet.

Yo das briliant... Very few of my friends have any idea about drinks... I do what you do with Wine...
Step 1 Buy 1.5 L for 7$ of some stupid shiite
Step 2 Tell people it's californian reserve wine from 2003
Step 3 Hear people say: I can see how it's good, very fine taste indeed.

People still like Jim Bean... that's how bad this world is.

Btw, I bought some woodford reserve (Kentucky Bourbon) to show Europeans while I'm here. Might not be the best, but it's the type of a decent priced bourbon that me likes.

I don't know if I've tried Woodford. I stopped buying different brands (except wild turkey, always keep some turkey on hand) when I discovered knob creek single barrel. It's my go-to bourbon and it is delish. Sip it to enjoy the many layers of flavors, or knock it back without a chaser and enjoy the smokey oak aftertaste. And it's a very pleasant buzz that creeps up on you very quickly. It's 120 proof so it doesn't take long to get you there.

Here is something to add to your shopping list:
    http://www.astorwines.com/SearchResu...htype=Contains

Vince Gilligan was talking about WhistlePig on a Breaking Bad podcast and said it was the best rye so I set out to find some. I had to have a liquor store special order the 12 year Boss Hog version for me and it took a couple months to get it (he said they can only get it during certain parts of the year for whatever reason) but it was very tasty indeed. Smooth initial taste that kind of reminds me of cherrywood smoke, then lots of subtle flavors that come one after another. It's best sipped slowly for proper enjoyment, but tempting to knock back glass after glass.

I mostly do work with vm's and automation for my job, but that was my personal gaming machine.
    Code:

    1	Seagate Constellation 1TB 2.5inch SAS st91000640ss	hdd $220.50
    2	Samsung 8GB DDR3 1600 ecc reg	ram $91.25
    2	LGA2011 Intel Xeon Eight-Core E5-2670 2.6GHz cpu $1,409.40
I do spend like ~50k every couple weeks installing batches of new video encoders though.

Server looks good. I got 256 RAM, I need more.

Why would you use an 8-core for gaming. Frankly the 6core on my intel doesn't fascinate me, since it won't help with gaming. As I understand, most games are still not threaded these days, so a higher clock would be preferred.

I got word on my CPU, and they overclocked it at 3.74 Ghz, so not too bad, but I bet they could have went over 30%.

One thing I don't get about the OC, the intel proc boosts itself to a higher clock when only one core is being used. So How does the OC fit into that?

    Bitches love cake.

AMD is becoming less and less relevant in the performance market, but they still have their place. AMD had a chance to make their comeback at one point, but I am beginning to think more and more, unless they have an ace in the hole, they are just going to become the next generations Cyrix. We really won't know until late 2014 to early 2015 when GloFo achieves 14nm FinFET and Planar FD-SOI. Supposedly GloFo's FD-SOI @ 28nm is going to be neck and neck with Intels 22nm bulk process. Does AMD have some design in progress that leverages these advances enough to catch up? With AMD's current CEO, anything is possible. We could spend a while discussing that alone, but ya.

What it comes down to in general when you are building a rig... you really have to think about whether you really need that extra 20% of power and if the cost increase is even warranted (because Intel is back to their old game of insanely overpricing their products.... because they can!). 90% of the time with high end Intel processors it isn't and AMD actually becomes a viable option. Ultimately no matter what you do... AMD has a cheaper platform and Intel overprices their chipsets which drives up the cost of motherboards on their platform (not even factoring in the fact you have to replace the motherboard every generation if you are an enthusiast).

If you don't really NEED it, even an i7 is excessive and an i5 with a nice overclock would suit the build better. Better to blow money on awesome **** rather than on computer hardware that will be worth 500$ in a couple years or less. Carpe Noctem!

Personally, I wouldn't go with that build from Cyberpower. Even though you have a warranty you probably aren't getting the same quality as if you just built it yourself. You don't REALLY think that Cyberpower uses retail grade parts do you? They make deals with manufacturers to cut down costs on the items that they move a lot of. I will flat out guarantee you, you are getting a better computer if you bought all the parts and built it yourself.

I've been trying to find a bottle of Pappy but have had no luck. I'm almost 30 and am still a Pappy virgin.

    This may be why...

    Update 4 years later:

I have had the pappy (and lots of other things - perks of best friend owning a liquor store)

The 15 year is definitely worth the hype but imo George T Stagg is just as good if not better, and possibly cheaper. The 12 and 10 year are both excellent as well, though the 10 is a bet less smooth and gets very angry if you drink it after taking a bite of steak. The 23 year sucks. Way too woody. Bottles of it are known to sell for $3k to idiots who like bad things.

We drank half that bottle of louie on the beach on new years eve, which was mostly just to flaunt baller status, but it's best to sip and savor as an after dinner drink if you have the palate to appreciate the complexity, layers of flavors and whatnot. It's good but not good enough to drop $3500 on a bottle so don't do that. Also don't try it on the rocks because then it tastes like tree bark. And if you don't know what tree bark tastes like then I'm sorry about your boring childhood.
