    Default Computer Repair Apps

Disclaimer: I use a lot of free software, I also use a lot of not-free software. For the sake of brevity there's a high probability I'm going to link to a few sites that might not be kosher with a lot of people. TBH, I couldn't really care less. Once you install it what you do with it after that is up to you. All that matters to me is that there's something out there that does the job quicker, easier and most efficiently than the rest.

In the interest of making this not as long as it could be (I TREE'd my flash drive and could dedicate a wiki to it...hmm...) I'm just going to go over a few packs of apps that are pretty amazing, and some even more amazing individual apps that I find necessary when working on computers.

    Boot CDs:

Suites: (extremely powerful stuff, look at it all)

    Individual apps:

    Regular Expressions:
    Overclocking:
    Anti-Virus:
    Anti-Malware/Spyware:
    Firewall:

Post if there's anything you feel is lacking or should be added to the list. I'll probably redo this based on tasks and start giving some descriptions.

Not really much a tool but I prefer it over the regular task manager

This is the current practice I have for the best result in "Computer Repair". Malwarebyte, avira, sysinternal:autorun and others were the good old days.
The application I would like to add is "Ghost.exe". Don't use clonezilla, it takes 30-40 minutes.
    Also, VMWare's "ThinApp".

    - Can be done in just 3 mins.
    - Don't waste time on scans, anti-virus, firewall, updates and reinstall
    - Forget about CD boot. It's slow and annoying. Thumbdrive boot is way faster. (It's like a harddisk)

    Setup :
    - Format computer, Install OS, drivers, overclock. This ensure your computer is perfectly clean.
    - Save this clean configuration into an image using Ghost in 3 mins or less. (see [2])
when creating the image, only backup the partition. (e.g. C:\). Not the whole harddisk.
With just OS and drivers, each ghost image won't be >10 GB. It takes less than 3 mins to restore.
Create another partition (e.g. Z:\). Save from C:\ to Z:\.
    - Use ThinApp to make programs portable, save in another partition to use them. (e.g. portable filezilla in D:\)
    - When having problem, Restore ghost image in 3 mins or less.
    - Create many images / Update them- e.g. Load WoW.ghost , update WoW, Save WoW.ghost (overwite).

When you waste 10 mins to scan for virus / problems on your computer, I have already restored my computer to a "clean" state twice.

    [2]
    1. Make a bootable thumbdrive
    - format thumbdrive with hpflash2.zip (HP format tool)
    - copy Win98 DOS files into thumbdrive
    2. add Ghost.exe from HirenCD
    3. For addational tools : Copy rest of HirenCD contents into thumbdrive. (partition / HDD regenerator /clone/ file manager, mini Windows)
    4. Update BIOS, change to "Boot from USB device". Write Ghost command line in autoexec.bat.
    5. Plug in thumbdrive, it will auto Load the Ghost Image. Enjoy a "clean" computer experience everyday.

I did this for my own computer, 200+ computers in my company, and I hide the partition with Ghost Images. This method defeats a team of IT support guys to reinstall, scan, check, update.

I hope you image'd 1 computer and deployed the rest over the network all at the same time.

But ya, anyone can format a comp. Real people want to preserve their tax documents, music and pictures. Things like that may work in a sea of cubicles but you'll never get any business because of the negative word of mouth outside. For me, formatting is the absolute last resort. And that's usually when their system files are totally corrupt and their recovery partition is infected also.

Repeat business is always worth a little bit more time. Also, added a couple more things.

Ubuntu by itself isn't that useful, it's also covered under HawkPE and if you want a real linux live cd you use Knoppix.

I don't think the point of repairing is to install stuff that might not solve the issue you're experiencing along with potential data loss caused by such installation. But if that's how you interpret repairing, then good luck in your future endeavors. Let winds of fate swiftly bring you to the dump you deserve.

I'm sure he installs that stuff on a USB and uses it from there.

You can't recover RAR passwords, you can brute them but that's entirely different.
