Hello, people who still read this forum. I've been running a little computer repair shop since fall 2012, among other things. Instead of charging an hourly rate like most shops, I do flat rate pricing for common jobs like malware & PUP (potentially unwated program) removal, so I try to spend as little time on them as possible. Thankfully there's a lot of free software that helps with that, some of which is already listed above.

I'm not going to list literally every piece of software I use, but here are the tools I use on a daily basis for the common cleanup & optimization jobs.

    Boot disks:
Hiren's Boot CD - 'MiniXP' PE (preinstall environment aka live OS) environment with a LOT of freeware tools. Also has Parted Magic (Linux environment), a Windows password reset tool, memtest, and some seriously useful DOS tools like HDD Revitalizer, which I've used to repair drives with bad sectors enough to retrieve data where other tools like HDD Regenerator failed. You can find modded versions on torrent sites, such as Restored Edition that has Windows 7 PE and lots of pirated toys like Paragon.

Gandalf50's Windows 8.1 PE - I have this as a UEFI bootable USB drive. It has a bunch of freeware tools but no Autoruns for some reason, which is one of my main reasons for using a PE, so I keep a copy on the USB drive.

Kon-Boot 1.1 - Bypasses Windows login without having to reset the password. Useful for when someone brings in a family member's computer and didn't think to get the password, and resetting it would only confuse them. Look for the torrent.

    Hardware checks:
CrystalDiskInfo Portable - Displays SMART data including power on count & time, temperature, etc. Tells you plainly if the drive is "Good" or "Caution" you need to do a backup before you go chkdsk'n and virus scannin'. Even something seemingly trivial like 1 reallocated sector count could mean clicks are in your near future.

HD Tune Pro Portable - Displays SMART data much like CDI, but allows you to scan the drive for errors, and other tools like secure erase. I typically only do the error scan when I've got a used hard drive that shows good SMART data but I want to make sure it's good before I put it in a customer's machine. Portable pro version available on a torrent site near you.

HWMonitor (zip) - Temperature, fan speed, voltage.

Cleanup tools, listed in the order in which I run them:
Autoruns - Check and remove items from Windows startup. Boot to a WinPE of your choice, run Autoruns and use the offline system tool to remove programs from startup before you boot into the installed Windows OS. This is the best way to get rid of rootkits and other malware that keeps the user from doing anything even in safe mode, like the FBI Virus and its variants, and fake antiviruses that keep you from running anything. Take it out of startup, then boot up normally and run your removal tools.

KillEmAll - Attempts to close all running, non-essential processes.

Rkill - Attempts to close known malware processes, resets some filetype associations, gets rid of Conduit's bull**** proxy thing and does some other checks. The other tools make this kind of redundant anymore but it doesn't take long so I run it anyway.

Junkware Removal Tool - Removes some malware and junk programs and repairs the damage they leave behind. It isn't updated very regularly but it does occasionally grab/fix things that the other tools miss. It doesn't require a reboot so when it's done you can go right to the next one.

AdwCleaner - Adware/PUP removal tool. Updated pretty regularly. This has fixed some weird problems with IE that I wasn't able to fix with other easy methods. Requires a reboot. It leaves a folder in the root directory so don't forget to delete that when you're done.

CCleaner Portable - Clean out temp files and caches, and reset window size/location and such. Give Malwarebytes and other scanners less **** to sift through. I normally leave cookies alone because old people don't even know they have a password for AOL/Yahoo, let alone know what the password is.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Magical malware/PUP remover. The free version works very well as an on-demand scanner. The paid version is a real-time scanner and seems to work better than a lot of products actually billed as anti-viruses. A keygen can be found to give yourself a lifetime license.

PC Decrapifier - Hasn't been updated in a long time, but it's supposed to be used for removing common unnecessary startup items, and junk programs & icons that tend to come pre-loaded on OEM computers. What it's way more useful for is uninstalling a bunch of stuff at once.

Revo Uninstaller Portable - Uninstall programs when the uninstaller doesn't work. One that immediately comes to mind is some versions of the Yahoo toolbar. It'll run the normal uninstaller, followed by scan and removal of files and registry entries left behind by the target program.

    Anti-Viruses:
Avast - the best free AV.

For paid AVs, there are several good ones. I usually recommend Kaspersky but feel free to check AV Comparatives before making a decision. Just stay the hell away from Mcafee.

Or you can just do what I do and don't download viruses, dummy.

    Other tools:
Adblock Plus - Block ads in your browser. You'll find your browsing experience generally much more pleasant. I'm pretty sure most of my customers bringing in infected machines got them infected by way of malicious advertisements. Which is why I usually don't install Adblock on their machines. Thank you come again

Anti-Virus removal tools - because sometimes malware will 'break' the installed anti-virus and the uninstaller won't work. Or just because. There are tools to remove pretty much every anti-virus, most of which can be found on bleepingcomputer.

BlueScreenView - Shows detailed information for BSODs that have occurred. There are lots and lots of other useful NirSoft utilities. Probably best to just grab the launcher that includes all of them, which Gamepin linked in the OP. Anti-viruses will likely detect it as a hacktool due to the password retrieval utilities included.

ComboFix - Scans for specific infections and then runs scripts to auto-fix those infections. Seems to have a bad rep for being a scary program that can break things. I personally have never had any problems with it. It's just not quite as useful to me anymore with the other tools available, but people still swear by it.

Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit - Scans for rootkits (and other things), removes them and repairs the damage they are known to cause. I don't think I've ever seen it find anything that MBAM couldn't get rid of, but I like it anyway because it's portable. What's also nice about it is that it will tell you if there is an AppInit_Dlls value (and remove it), which is typically a sign of a rootkit, but if you ran Autoruns then you'd have already dealt with it.

Ninite - Automatically download & install/update lots of software, automatically opting out of the bull**** adware they often come packaged with. Just select the ones you want to grab, hit download, and it'll create a custom installer with the selected apps.

Windows Repair All-In-One Portable - Auto-fixes a lot of common Windows issues and actually works really damn well. It has replaced a lot of my scripts and reg fixes.

Two of my essentials (Anti-Malware/Spyware) :

HijackThis 2.0.4 - shows which processes run on startup, IE startup pages, browser plugins, name server changes, etc... pretty much check boxes and click "fix" to make the bad things go away
Spybot Search & Destroy 2.4 - finds, removes, and blocks malware

(+1 big vote for NirSoft apps, can do all kinds of things from recovering browser/wifi passwords, view open ports and network traffic, etc)
