Vista or XP?
Hey
A few days back, my dad and I was going to check the RAM memory on my computer. We only had 512 and we were going to buy more...
But when we had opened the computer, looked at the memory and then put all things back, the computer didn't start.
Now I am going to buy a new computer... but I don't know whats best:
Windows Vista or Windows XP?
Your kidding right?
Oh and btw even though xp rocks you cant get it very easily in retail stores anymore.

And for the computer problem it sounds like you seated the ram wrong, just reseat it. Aka put it back in and make sure it snaps into place. If it is seated wrong it wont even post most of the time.

You see, it's not the memory that causes the computer can't start... We tested with a new memory and tested all four places. I think it is the mother-card, or what that is in english, is the problem...
If I had to choose strictly between XP and Vista, I'd pick XP.
However, if I have to choose between Windows' system cores, I'd pick either:
- Windows Server 2003 (from which WinXP x64 is based off) or...
- Windows Server 2008 (which pretty much is Vista, but without all the bloatware inside and it eats A LOT less resources).
In my opinion, if you're going to buy a Microsoft OEM OS, you should pick Windows XP.
Would be even better, if it was x64, because then you wouldn't have to worry about an annoying little problem regarding allocating more than 4GB of RAM.
The x64 market is growing extensively right now and I doubt that you'll regret this choice.

If free time less then 1 hour per day, require new video games = false

If available money less then $500 and loading time in your current operating system greater then 20 seconds, DirectX 10 = false
else DirectX 10 = true
If IQ less then 50, unable to search Google to get DX10 working on XP = true

Hardly anything runs on Server editions... It can get just a slight bit annoying. Okay, a bit MORE annoying.

Mac > XP > Vista
BUT
Most games (like those from Steam) are Windows only, so I would get XP if you're into some Windows only games, but if Brood War is all you play (or any other Co-OS games), get Mac...alot less problems, and most viruses are made to screw around with Windows.
Vista fails so bad, omfg...
XP hands down.
Linux > Everything else thats Unix based.
But for this situation, XP, and order a free cd of Ubuntu from Canonical.
I can't post mine, because my entire cp page is stretched due to that massive picture Mad posted in a negrep.
XP with nLite (nLite - Deployment Tool for the bootable Unattended Windows installation I think) rocks - 250mb unattended installation ISO with SP3 takes 15 mins to install, uses about 1gig of disk space, and runs really stable and fast
Vista.
XP is for smelly nubs.
Vista is for nubs that can't notice the huge performance hit and/or prefer pretty over functional.
Without a doubt XP. You are going to have a really hard time finding a copy of XP though. I would recommend just pirating a corporate edition ( i can hook you up with a legit key - just pm me).

You know, I've never actually experienced this huge fps loss or performance issues that a lot of XP fanatics are talking about. Sure, Vista is a tad bit slower in certain aspects, but nothing that has been noticeable or can't be reduced with tweaking. In games, I've only gained a couple of fps rather than dropped, which bewilders me.
I used to be a big supporter of Vista. I tried my very best to be optimistic about it. But after a year, hardware manufacturers (particularly nVidia and Creative - the two I use) just can't seem to get their drivers and firmware right.
The bottom line is XP, hands down. Even if it is marginal on some systems, you do get better performance, fewer bugs, and are able to play any game just perfectly.
