ffmpeg for pc/mac.

Also here's a hint. IPOD formated videos will play on the psp.

I don't own an Ipod, and I will try AVS.

PSPVideo9 is what I use. Not only can you convert the files, but it automatically renames the files and with a few extra clicks you can copy the files to where they're supposed to go. If you have problems with audio not being in sync with the video you could try a program called Super. I haven't used that though.

Although the Ipod and PSP use the same format for videos, the PSP movie needs a second (.THM) file or it will show up as unsupported data when you try to play it. Running the file through your converter will fix this.

If you don't know how to manually rename the files and where to put them it explains it here:http://www.askdavetaylor.com/how_can_i_watch_dvd_movies_on_a_sony_psp.html

I use a simple software called Switch (http://www.nch.com.au/switch/plus.html) by NCH (http://www.nch.com.au/). It, in my opinion, has many many options for conversions.
It seems a little slow sometimes, though.

I'm using total video converter right now. Fast.

You can't say how fast it is without checking out other programs to compare it to.
