I just started using Ubuntu Edgy Eft last week and I'm loving it. I already have Automatix, Cedega and Beryl. I can't wait for the weekend to find more apps. Erm, Gnutella!

Cedega? did you have to pay for that? i;ve been using wine because it works for me, but i hear Cedega is nice . what do you think of it?

It's great but as with many things in linux it's hard to get working the first time around, especially since you have to crack it. However, it's better than wine. All you have to do is find a good torrent for it. My friend got Half-life 2 to work with Ubuntu using Cedega.

ive got wine and cedega
wine works better for some things, cedega for others (mostly games)

cedega costs 5 dollars, so i just paid for it, you get access to their support forums and can vote on what games they should support

what kind of newb pirates 5 dollar software..

oh ya BERYL RULES !!! omg i got the newer version yesterday some of the new effects just about floored me ;)
beam and flame transitions were sweet, also the transparent cube, and floating windows were awesome

its incredible how awesome it looks ;)
so much eye candy my eyes are getting cavities

I'm not a newb, I don't have a credit card so I couldn't pay for anything online even if I wanted to.

You got Beryl SVN? I use that whenever I'm just downloading or showing off to friends, but I find XGL in general to be buggy with any games.

with xorg7.1 and new nvidia drivers you dont need Xgl
and games work fine!
no issues, no work arounds

I can attest to that. The latest nvidia drivers ROCK. Unless you compile for one kernel and try to load a different one using the nvidia xorg conf, lol. I figured that out because I just compiled 2.6.18.5 and then compiled nvidia against that kernel...forgot to move that kernel to default location in grub and it auto loaded the 2.6.17mvd kernel...lol. To say the least X crashed...."wouldnt load" untill I booted the correct kerenel. Found that out in about 10 seconds.

I can't afford anything right now, so GNOME mode for games it is for me.

Aren't (comparable) ATI cards better than nvidia? Many people told me they think ATI tends to have better performance.

No, not until you hit the 1600xtx.
