my laptop doesnt have sound for some reason. when i try to go to the volume control it gives me a message saying "there are no active mixer devices available. to install mixer devices, go to control panel, click printers and other hardwares, and then click add hardware." when i click on add hardware, nothing appears. how do i get my sound back?

It's probably a driver that's missing.

:yeah:

Go to the manufacturers website. I don't know about other companies, but the HP site offers drivers to be downloaded.

System<Hardware<Device Manager<Sound, Video and game controllers. Check if any of those are having any issues. Also see if there are any other devices that need installed. (Under other devices, lol.)

Reboot, you may have ended the process svchost.exe by accident, that used to happen to me when I didn't know the process names.

when you get that mixer error its because either A your driver isnt loaded (No driver) or B Driver is Corrupt or C a program is crashing the driver (if i play Sim City 4 my sound dies like how you explain, i have to restart to get it back)

i already downloaded that and tried following the instructions to update my audio but my device manager is ****ed up. nothing appears when i open it. all i get is an old fashioned window that opens up and my actions are very limited.

Sounds like you have some corrupted files on your HD. Try doing a system restore to when it was working, or install the drivers package off the Hp site. Do you still have the discs that came with your PC, and are you using Windows XP?
