And what exactly will opening ports do. Does it just solely eliminate the chance of running into a game that has a latency too high to join?

If you cant host Starcraft games on Battle.net(game creators latency is too high), it means your router is blocking the neccessary ports in your router. Many programs, including Bittorrent clients require you to forward certain ports in order to connect.
Each router has a different interface, and different menus, but they all have a port forwarding option. To find step by step directions on how to open these ports on your own router please visit this forum, and use their search feature and find your router.
Here is a list of programs that require you to forward ports in your router in order for it to function properly. There are UDP and TCP ports, you have to enter the port numbers for them seperately.
Starcraft Ports:
TCP: 6112-6119,4000
UDP: 6112-6119

What if we can't access the router options page, because your dad put a pass on it and you don't know it?

I doubt your father set the password unless he knows a bit about computers.
Enter the password as admin, and leave the password area blank.

I've tried that; doesn't work. And yea, he does know quite a lot about computers.
Nah, that doesn't work either. There must be some way to recover your password. I'm on a Belkin router - anyone know how?
There is no way, Maybe you need to keylog him lol

Edit: more detailed, what i mean is i forwarded the port on one of my computer which is my computer in my room so now people can join my games, but when i did the same to my brothers computer which is on the same router and stuff it doesnt work for him
here is a link to the site that i followed: http://portforward.com/english/route.../Starcraft.htm scroll to the very bottom where it shows the virtual server. see how it says starcraft1 and starcarft2 i did all tht and put my ip adress in there for me and it works. now if i wanted it to work for my brothers computer what do i do? i have tried to add a starcraft3 and starcraft4 everything the same just changed his ip address but it still doesnt work... any suggestions?

Its a little more complicated when you are trying to play with 2 people on one router. Heres a link that explains it all out. http://www.bwhacks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3643

what do I put in the incoming and outgoing ports? 6112-6119,4000?
:domo: :domo: :domo: :domo: :domo: :domo: :domo: :domo: :domo: :domo: :domo: :domo: :domo: :domo: :domo:
follow it step by step ya on the first slot incoming and outcoming is 6112-6119 then the second slot is 4000-4000

I'm usin a D-Link Wireless AirPremier DWL-AG132 USB Adapter.. I'm in University and they blocked all ports needed for online games and P2P.. I don't even know where to look for the access for port forwarding. There's a shortcut on my desktop for the Wireless Adapter, but when I double click it, it jus goes to somethin about my wireless connection and that I can configure it.. or my default connection. I don't see the utility screen for some ****ed up reason and I don't know why..
Win XP SP 2.. Want to know how to forward ports please.. like bypass the University's restrictions.
Your ISP does.Originally Posted by Joe-
password and password for login and pass work for quite a few aswell. You can change the pass of the login though. For me, verizon. If i changed my password to my isp email that password also becomes the pass for the router page.
