Because companies are cheap and ripoffs.
ok, so this old lady got an Internet connection of 40Gb/s from her son for free.
heres the article 75 year old woman, has Worlds fastest home Broadband connection at 40Gbps, Voodish Articles.
now i want to know why im paying $50 a month for 150Kb/s which also has ****ty service and horribly high ping. then my friends that live in town have fiber optic internet in their homes for $40 a month at like 100Mb/s. its 2009 why teh hell is there still slow internet, it cant be that hard to speed things up, and besides fiber is cheaper by the foot compared to the slow coaxial cable im stuck with. and when i go to work and use the NMCI intranet i get like 1Mb/s from any workstation.
i smell a giant smelly fish

Because companies are cheap and ripoffs.
if that was true then we would all have fiber since it is cheaper in the long run and its 10 times faster than the fastest coaxial connections.

Its not cheaper. Think about it. They have to dig up the old cable, get rid of it, and then put new cable to every house. It may be cheaper, but is it really worth it to them? No. In a way its not cheaper, if you take in what i said.

Fiber Optics may be cheaper by the foot, but it has taken them 20 years or more of laying it down, and they're only now just recently turning it on. Also Fiber Optics arn't faster right now anyway, because they still have to use a Cable to connect it to your house, the Fiber Optics don't run directly into your house, so the bandwidth is still bottlenecked.
Also America has some of the worst internet speeds of the world, its because our infrastructure is old, and not really up to date. It would cost the Cable and Telephone companies millions upon millions to replace all the old lines with new ones.
Yeah, fairies wear boots and you gotta believe me.
Yeah I saw it, I saw it, I tell you no lies.
here in japan they have fiber lines straight to the home then the company installs a box to convert it to catv
they also have to upgrade all their equipment to deal with fiber optic cables as well, and that stuff isn't cheap at all.
but once its in place, they can really push out data without slowdowns, because their networks are so much faster. individually it may not be faster due to the cable into your house(although I'd think your ping might be better), but if they aren't using fiber and your entire neighborhood subscribes to them and all of you are using the Internet download/uploading, you start to see them throttling people so everyone can download in your grid.
It allows them to offer higher speeds and guarantee them, fiber cables aren't effected by interference, don't need repeaters or whatnot everywhere, and can push through incredible amounts of data at what i presume is nearly the speed of light, since their using light.
but its not worth it to them paying the people who lay the line(digging whatnot), the town/city(permits), the people who plan the grid out, and then for the equipment and cables needed for miles upon miles of connections. not to mention they have a grid up already and have to keep that running or all their customers are going to leave them while trying to transition over to a new grid seamlessly(or face angry customers).
